As the Italians would say, you should expect “un vino importante” in other words, a wine of prestige, superior quality with the ability to age well and for long periods of time.
The altitude and climate of the Montalcino region has provided an area where Sangiovese ripens more fully and consistently than anywhere else in Tuscany. These factors contribute to the body, colour, extract and tannins commonly associated with Brunello di Montalcino.
The dynamic Gigliola Giannetti is the face of Le Potazzine today (formally known as Le Potazzine Gorelli). Gigliola runs the estate with her young daughters Viola and Sofia. The main organic estate vineyard is planted where chestnut trees had grown before, an oasis of calm at 500m, to the southwest of township of Montalcino. Wine is fermented in open wooden vats with indigenous yeasts and without temperature control, which is certainly not a conventional oenological practice.
In the past Le Potazzine winemaker Giuseppe Gorelli has worked alongside Giulio Gambelli at the consorzio and many of the elements of the legendary master taster’s touch are evident in Le Potazzine wines: late picking and long maceration times, the pale shades, the lovely natural expression on the nose, the soft, ripe tannins, and the sensation of breadth on the palate.
Le Potazzine wines are rated as some of the best tasted by Gambero Rosso. With only five hectares of vines located at one of the highest and coolest points in the appellation, the wines are exceptionally elegant and fine, sold on allocation, which means limited availability, many of the wine are from 93 Points to 99 Points by Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiasts, Wine Advocate, Robert Parker and others.
